If you're in your late 20s or 30s you are probably in that time of your life where you look back on highschool and think fondly about it. Your memory is starting to blur out the day to day drama, stressful exams, and horrible exes. Hooray! This is good news for many reasons, but don't let the nostalgia fool you - highschool sucked.
You know what your memory isn't ever able to fade away however? The way your favourite songs from years gone by can still bring you back in time. The way every lyric seeps into your veins and pumps life into your soul. These aren't things you let go of. There are many bands that evoke these emotions in me, too many to even count. I think part of the reason your memory doesn't erase these feelings and memories is because the music you were raised on defines you... your personality, your style, your friends even. You can't just throw all that out the window when highschool ends.
Maybe this isn't true for you. Maybe you weren't that into music and it in no way defined you. If that's the case, I must admit I don't understand this concept at all. I can't imagine not feeling the connection I feel to these artists I listen to, sing with, and live every moment by. I can't understand not having a soundtrack to every awful, or wonderful day of your life. Music is my life. I don't say this because it was a "thing" a while back. I say this because I wouldn't be able to breathe without these songs in my heart, without these words in my head.
It takes a lot for me to glom onto a new band, and it's even harder to get me to listen to something other than my old faithfuls while in the car on a road trip, or at work with my headphones on.
Have you ever got goosebumps seeing your favourite song performed? Have you ever chose to listen to a live album over a studio version because you can feel the intensity of the crowd through your speakers? How about watching an artist stop singing mid-song because the audience is singing every word so loudly that his presence is hardly necessary? I've experienced all of these with my favourite artist, and I hope you have too. If not you're missing out... Just my two cents.
Until next time...
