When was the last time you took a look at your bank statement? I do it at least once a week, and it is SHOCKING. $5 here for fast food, $10 there for a shirt, $3 a day for coffee... it adds up quickly - some weeks I find I've spent over $100 on NOTHING, nothing important anyway. As you may sense, I struggle with my shopping addiction on a daily basis, but that's not what I'm here to talk about.
If everyone in North America cut their "useless spending" in half and donated that money to a good cause instead, do you know how much money that could be? Millions and millions of dollars that could be utilized in the research of curing diseases, or improving the quality of life in third world countries. I suspect many people have stopped reading by now. Many have no interest in pleas for help and financial support until something bad happens to them or someone they know. I by no means am any better, until now I didn't do much to help others either. I've decided though that I need to put an end to that, and put other's before myself.
There is this great not for profit, called the Dear Jack Foundation, who is a strong voice in the fight against young adult cancers. DJF was Founded by Andrew McMahon (the talented front man of both Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin), who fought his own battle against Acute Lymphatic Leukemia in 2005. After rewatching Andrew's documentary Dear Jack this weekend, I have started putting things in motion to help this cause any way I can. Following his journey through diagnoses, treatment, and returning to music is very moving and for anyone who loves SoCo or Jack's Mannequin, its a must see. I urge you to contribute, if not to this cause, to ANY cause that touches your heart. Let your hard earned money help someone in need, you never know when you might be in a vulnerable position yourself, and besides, we all know you don't need that other t-shirt.
Until next time...
